Neck and mid back pain due to abnormal posture in the work place is an extremely common issue in the desk worker population. Most of this is due to our body’s adaptation to the repetitive stress the desk worker puts him/herself through their average 8 hour shift. The usual characteristics of these workers present with are:

  • Rounded shoulders

  • Hypertonic pectoral and posterior neck muscles

  • Forward head posture

  • Weak and inhibited scapular stabilizing and deep anterior neck muscles

This condition is called Upper Cross Syndrome. This in turn will lead to neck and mid back aches and pains as well as extreme muscle tightness. If left unaddressed for a long period of time, bony changes to your spine may occur as a sign of accelerated spinal degeneration.

Treatment consists of rehabilitation to strengthen the rhomboids and deep neck flexors, stretching of your chest and posterior neck musculature, and adjustments to the hypo-mobile areas of your spine which would include your mid back and upper neck vertebral levels.
